MP3DG is a software framework for the design, implementation and evaluation of point cloud compression algorithms. It has been developed in the Distributed and Interactive Systems (DIS) group as an extension of the open Point Cloud Library (PCL).
PCL is a large-scale project for 2D/3D image and point cloud processing. It is used in a wide range of applications, such as virtual and augmented reality, 3D imaging, and 3D Simultaneous Localisation And Mapping (SLAM).
The MP3DG framework provides objective quality metrics, real-time compression, time-varying compression, lossy and lossless anchor/attribute codecs, and a test bench for consistent comparative evaluation. It is used for the development of an international point cloud compression standard by the MPEG 3DGC working group, which includes companies like Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories (MERL), Technicolor, Huawei, MSR and Nokia. It is the bases of the anchors generated for evaluating the proposals for an international standard by the MPEG Point Cloud ad-hoc working group.
