MonetDB is a relational database management system (DBMS) providing high performance on complex queries against large databases. Based on a column-oriented architecture, its typical performance is one order of magnitude better than that of traditional row-store database systems for very large datasets -- think hundreds of columns and millions of rows.
Nowadays, MonetDB is the most widespread open-source column-store DBMS package. Typical application domains include customer relationship management (CRM), telecommunications, healthcare management, astronomy, remote sensing, biology, and seismology. Serving as a reference implementation, over the years, the system's concepts and technical innovations have found their way into the product offerings from all major RDBMS vendors.
In 2013, the Database Architectures (DA) group spun off MonetDB Solutions, a technical consulting company providing packaged solutions and tailored services for datawarehousing, business intelligence and big data analytics.
