Constraints are studied in a variety of computer science disciplines. Comparative studies of the different perceptions of constraints and approaches to their management can lead to valuable cross-fertilisation of the different research tracks. This paper sets out such a comparative study. More in particular, it is shown how constraints between graphical objects can be modelled in an advanced model for object databases. Through examples, it is shown that a "divide and conquer" strategy, developed in database research is also a viable approach for constraint management in graphical systems.
